Provenance

Kale Family Collection

This is a unique 11 x 14 Goldtone, never before published, and unknown until now. Discovered in 2023 by Bruce Kapson in the Kale Family Goldtone Collection. It is unquestionably the rarest Curtis Goldtone in existence.

Untitled and in its original Curtis Studio Seattle batwing frame, this image is of a 1914 Curtis family reunion during the filming of In The Land of the Headhunters on Vancouver Island.

Left to right: possibly respected ethnologist and linguist George Hunt; Curtis's daughters Florence and Beth; his five-year-old daughter Katherine (Billy); his wife Clara; and Curtis posing for the camera in formal garb with tie as he directs the Kwakiutl long-boat.

The absolute extraordinary rarity of the image itself, the sigularity and significance of it appearing as a Goldtone cannot be overstated. As the only extant print of this image and, accordingly, it is perhaps the most significant single photograph by Curtis ever to be offered for sale.

This Goldtone will be published for the first time in Dr. Larry Len Peterson's upcoming book, Edward S. Curtis, Printing The Legends, out in January of 2024.
