DEPART FOUNDATION: Rediscovering Genius: The Works of Edward S. Curtis
West Hollywood, California
The exhibition was the premier institutional presentation of the Masterwork Copper Photogravure Printing Plates, the source works for Curtis's The North American Indian as well as rare examples representing every photographic medium in which Curtis worked.
Importantly, the exhibition provided the backdrop venue for the DEPART Foundation’s December 15, 2016 hosting of the first and only public conversation in Los Angeles with Standing Rock Sioux Tribal Chairman Dave Archambault II about the Dakota Access Pipeline with panelists Jane Fonda, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and Bruce Kapson, moderated by Jon Christensen:
This conversation will address how the situation in the high plains along the Missouri river in North Dakota is of historic, ecological and environmental consequence not only to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and Native Americans but to all Americans.
Although separated by 118 years, the Native American issues of concern to Edward S. Curtis and those of the protestors of the Dakota Access Pipeline at Standing Rock remain the same.
